How to Host a Super Mario Party

Everything you need to host the best Super Mario party in the galaxy!

Step 1: Make and hand out invites

Draw Power Stars on yellow paper or cardboard, making sure they’re big enough to include all the details of your party. Cut them out, then on the back write the important info like the name of the guest, when and where the party will be, and who to RSVP to.

Oh, and don’t forget to include catchphrases like “Mama mia!”, “Here we go!” and “Woo hoo!”.

Step 2: Decide on costumes

Ask everyone to dress up as the character they play as most in Mario Kart, or who they’re most excited to see in the The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Want something simpler? Ask your mates to wear fake mustaches or a character’s hat to the party!

Step 3: Get decorating

Stick to the iconic colours and use blue, red and white wherever you can. Think balloons, streamers, tablecloths, cups, plates and napkins.

There’s lots you can DIY too! You could craft some questions blocks by covering cardboard boxes in yellow paper and drawing question marks on them. Warp pipes can be whipped up with empty Pringles cans painted green, and mushrooms, clouds and bob-ombs can be drawn, cut out and stuck on walls. Don’t forget to sprinkle chocolate coins on tables too!

Step 4: Make a playlist

The Super Mario Bros. Movie soundtrack should be played on repeat! Our top tracks include:

  • ‘Peaches’ by Jack Black
  • ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler
  • ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC
  • ‘DK Rap’ by Grant Kirkhope

For retro gaming vibes, we also recommend the original Super Mario Bros. soundtrack. Your parent or guardian can find this for you on YouTube.

Step 5: Let the games begin

There are so many awesome Super Mario videogames you could play, but for a party you need co-op! These ones are perfect to kickstart the fun:

1.        Super Mario Party Jamboree (or any Mario Party game you own!)

2.        Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

3.        Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2

4.        Super Mario Bros. Wonder

5.        Super Mario Odyssey

Don’t own a Nintendo Switch? Watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie instead.

Step 6: Offline activities

After screen time, have a Yoshi egg hunt (using plastic or chocolate eggs) in your backyard or living room or build epic racing karts out of LEGO. Know a lot about the videogames? Quiz your friends with Super Mario trivia. Want to burn off some energy? Set up an obstacle course that looks like a level in your favourite Super Mario videogame – fastest to complete it wins!

Step 7: Eat up

Hold a competition to see who can make the best Super Mario-themed pizza. You’ll need pizza bases, pizza sauce, shredded cheese and a range of cut up toppings.

Top tip: Pizzas could feature Super Mario characters, items or symbols, or you could even design a Mario Kart track with the toppings!
