Our resident 10-year-old games journalist tells it like it is.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a wonderful game, and here are my thoughts about it. The intro was really awesome. It starts when Baby Bowser Jr gets the book in the title and tries to find the mysterious creatures, but then he falls off his mini plane and Yoshi finds the book instead.
I think it’s very cool that you go around the area and do the challenges the book tells you to do. The first chapter is called Wildwoods. You walk around the area and pick up little walking flowers, collect coins, and do mini challenges. You even have to clean your flower when it gets dirty by taking it through a puddle. Then you finish that part and move on. It’s sort of the same chapter again after that, but with a different mysterious creature each time, which keeps it interesting.
One bit I really liked was running around an area dodging bees while trying to grab the flowers they’re guarding. Another part has a creature with a leaf on its head, and when you jump on it, it plays a musical note. You have to reach the end and find all the flowers, but you also have to make a proper beat using those notes, which is tricky and fun at the same time. Then you finish the level.
My thoughts on the game are that it is really fun to play and I love it.
TIPS AND TRICKS
1. Talk to Every Creature First
Before you rush off collecting, use your Magnifying Glass on each new creature to unlock its habitat. Every creature reacts differently to Yoshi’s moves like gobbling, tail-flicking and bouncing, and figuring out what each one does is how you uncover the hidden flowers.
2. Don’t Leave the Flower Dirty
When your little flower friend gets muddy, hop it through clean water to wash it off. Keeping creatures in the right state – clean, muddy, fed or bloomed – is often the secret to triggering a Discovery and making a Smiley Flower appear.
3. Learn the Musical Order
On the singing creatures with leaves on their heads, the notes only count if you bounce them in the correct order. Work through the tune slowly from the start instead of mashing, because one wrong note resets the whole song. Hold the jump button to bounce higher and buy yourself more time between hops.
4. Sneak Past the Bees
In the bee creature’s area, the flowers are guarded and the bees will chase you. Move carefully, grab the flower without being spotted, and clear out the hives rather than charging straight in. Patience beats panic here.
5. Use Bubbles to Reach High Flowers
Some flowers float way up high. Carry a bubble-making creature and run back and forth to make bubbles you can ride upward. Feed it an apple first for bigger, longer-lasting bubbles that get you even higher.
